This is a remote role with 10 hours per week.

The role of the hearing officer for the Professional Practices Advisory Committee is one of a facilitator. The hearing officer is not an appointed member of the committee, does not have voting rights, and has only limited decision-making authority. The committee members are responsible for evaluating the evidence and making a finding of fact, conclusions of law, and recommendations to the Board. 

Roles & Responsibilities

• The Director of Enforcement is the liaison for the hearing officer, advises the hearing officer on their role and responsibilities, and writes the findings of fact, conclusions of law, and recommendations.
• Role As the facilitator of the meeting, it is the responsibility of the hearing officer to handle the following for each case:
• Call the meeting or prehearing to order Introduce the case
• Call the roll call
• Communicate with the respondent or attorney about the process of administrative hearings Admission of evidence
• Swear in of all witnesses
• Ensure the hearing follows Robert’s rules Guide each step of the process
• Guide the discussion around the findings of fact, conclusions of law, and recommendations
• Confirm all recommendations and call for a roll call vote
• Confirm the vote and final recommendation to the Board for the record close or continue the hearing for each case
• Occasionally the hearing office will be asked to approve or deny a continuance request if it falls past a specifically set deadline, depending on the type of hearing. 
• Also, occasionally the committee will request additional documents or there is evidence that will be presented during the hearing as a late and supplemental exhibit.
• The hearing officer will discuss the evidence with the party presenting it to determine it’s value to the hearing and legitimacy for the late submission and the committee will vote on the admission of those documents or the evidence in question.
• The hearing office is responsible for reviewing each case, evidence, and applicable case law prior to the hearing.
• The hearing office is not responsible for writing or editing any reports, findings of fact, conclusions of law, or recommendations

Required Experience - Prior experience with the Arizona State Board of Education.
