CCIE Routing and Switching Job Description

The Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Routing and Switching (CCIE Routing and Switching) is an expert-level network engineer who provides technical consulting and engineering services related to the planning, design, testing, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of complex, converged network infrastructures with security and network resilience in mind. While the CCIE reports directly to the Assistant CIO for Business Operations, this position will work closely with ITS network and information security managers and staff as well as vendor partners. The CCIE will also be expected to provide reports and conduct presentations to the CIO on an ongoing basis.

The CCIE is a technical expert level position serving as the principle network architect responsible for proposing high level design, reviewing/providing feedback on low level design, implementation support, and problem resolution. The CCIE understands network routing protocols and features and is called upon to identify and resolve any network issues. This position will advise ITS network management on best practices to monitor the city’s enterprise network. The CCIE also provides expert level recommendations and support in the design and implementation of data center (core) networking systems. The CCIE specializes in secure and reliable network design. The ideal candidate has a strong grasp of the 7 layers of the OSI model and can easily translate difficult networking related topics

The CCIE must have theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience installing, analyzing and documenting network infrastructures consisting of Cisco enterprise class switches and routers. The CCIE must have a firm grasp on network configuration best practices, mitigation strategies for network-based security threats, and adoption of secure wireless networking within an enterprise. This position requires a strong understanding of current network protocols such as: Internet Protocol (IP), Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), User Datagram Protocol (UDP), Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), and Multicast routing protocols. Furthermore, this position requires expertise in wide area, metropolitan area, local area, and optical networking technologies.  

The professional must have experience implementing and supporting Nexus 7K and 9K enterprise switches or equivalent.  The CCIE must have experience using port and packet analyzers/tools (e.g., SPAN, ERSPAN, Ethanalyzer, and NetFlow) to resolve problems and optimize the network core and edge. This professional must be an excellent communicator and problem solver able to easily explain the meaning of results generated by these tools to engineers and less technical executives.

Key duties include:

  • Reviewing existing enterprise and business network diagrams and documentation for accuracy and recommending changes as appropriate
  • In coordination with ACIO-Business Operations, assess the current network architecture for all city enterprise and business networks that addresses –
    • network resiliency
    • network security
    • opportunities for improvement
    • supportability
  • Developing an enterprise network recommendations plan for the following:
    • Increased resiliency
    • Increased network security to include–
      • Network segmentation
      • Internet edge
      • DMZ considerations
      • Intra data center optical networking
      • Network security
      • Wi-Fi
    • Increased network capacity
    • Simplified network administration, management, and monitoring
    • Agility (increased capabilities)
    • Public/Private network configuration and control (Wi-Fi)
    • Payment Card Industry (PCI) environment configuration, management, controls, and auditing
    • Quality of Service (QoS)

Qualifications

This position requires the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Routing and Switching certificate as well as a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Telecommunication, Electronics, or related field. Candidates with prior specialized work experience as a CCIE is required.

The CCIE Routing and Switching professional must have 10 years or more of experience with Cisco networks as a senior network engineer, network architecture, and/or network security engineer.
